What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy refers to exercises performed in a warm water environment. It is particularly useful for people who find that land-based exercise is too difficult or causes a significant flare-up of their pain.

What are the benefits of hydrotherapy?

Water has several properties that allows you to exercise and maintain movement in an environment where pain is reduced. The benefits of exercising in water include:

  • Buoyancy counters the effects of gravity to offload force through your joints. This enables you to work through greater range of movement.
  • Moving through water creates resistance to increase muscle strength and endurance
  • The hydrostatic pressure helps to improve circulation and reduce swelling
  • In a heated pool, the warmth of the water promotes relaxation of muscles and joints

Hydrotherapy can be an effective option for treating conditions such as:

  • Arthritis (eg: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Post-operative rehabilitation (eg: joint replacements, reconstructions)

What exercises can I do in the water?

Most exercises that can be done on land can also be done in the water. Your physiotherapist or exercise physiologist will assess your condition and design an appropriate exercise program for you to complete during your session. Your practitioner will provide close supervision to ensure that you are safe and doing your exercises with good technique.
