School students should carry no more than 10% of their weight in a backpack!

A recent report in the Armidale Examiner discussed the importance of correct loading of backpacks for students:

With students going back to school for 2014 the Australian Physiotherapy Association is warning students, parents and educators about the risks of backpacks straining young backs.

To ensure the best results for a young student’s back they should make sure to limit the amount they carry and not carry more than 10 per cent of their body weight.

In addition packing heavy items close to the spine can reduce the strain along with wearing the backpack over both shoulders.

The Centre for Allied Health Research at the University of South Australia conducted a study involving more than 1200 12-18 year olds and found that a number of young people carried backpack weights in excess of 47 per cent of their body weight.

Students at PLC use PhysioPak bags which are designed to be easier on student’s backs.

Head of junior school Melissa Watters said as an educator she thought it was important for students to take care of their backs.

“In the junior years it is very important that they have a well fitted backpack to carry the gear to school,” she said.

“They’re easy to use and they adjust to different heights and different sizes.”

So if your child is suffering back pain, neck pain or shoulder pain, it may be because of a misfitting schoolbag. The friendly team at Toormina Physiotherapy are ready to advise schoolkids and their parents in the Toormina, Sawtell, Coffs Harbour Boambee or anywhere on the Mid North Coast.
